Dan ben Yaacov Avinu Born: Aram Naharayim, 1566 BCE Died: Egypt, 1439 BCE Dan was the Son of Jacob the Patriarch and Bilha the handmaid of Rachel. He is one of the 12 Tribes. Dan's sons: Hushim (Genesis 46:23) - [that is , his sons were] energetic and astute [individuals] and innumerable (Targum Yonatan, Bereshit 46:23). Dan's sons: Hushim (Genesis 46:23) - numerous as a forest of reeds (Bava Batra 143b). Hushim, the son of Dan is the one who smote Esau, when he tried to prevent Yaacov's sons to bury him in Mearat Hamachpela, the cave of the Patriarchs, in Hevron (Sota 13b). In the merit of Dan [her handmaiden's son], she [Rachel] was granted conception (Bereshit Rababah 73:4) Yaacov's prophecy for Dan was: that he would judge (and defend) his people as one of the tribes of Israel.Dan was buried in his children's city, Eshthaol (Sefer Hayashar, end of Yehoshua).
